The University of Manchester
One of the so-called “red brick” universities, formed in 2004, after the merger of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, the former staff and students of which won 23 Nobel Prizes. It offers 500 academic programmes (the highest number of subjects in the whole Great Britain) for more than 40,000 students. It is ranked as one of the most significant educational institutions not only in the United Kingdom, but also in the world. The university is divided into four faculties, each of them sub-divided as follows: - Faculty of Humanities: the School of Arts, Histories and Cultures (Archaeology; Art History & Visual Studies; Classics and Ancient History; Drama; English and American Studies; History; Museology; Music; and Religions and Theology); Combined Studies; Education; Environment and Development; Architecture; Languages, Linguistics and Cultures; Law; Social Sciences and the Manchester Business School. - Faculty of Life Sciences - Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences: the Schools of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science; Chemistry; Computer Science; Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Science; Physics and Astronomy; Electrical & Electronic Engineering; Materials; Mathematics; and Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering. - Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences: the Schools of Medicine; Dentistry; Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work; Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; and Psychological Sciences. School of Medicine, established in 1874, is one of the biggest schools in the United Kingdom. It employs 1,300 staff and teaches around 2,000 undergraduates. It is divided into five different divisions: Manchester Medical School (undergraduate tuition), Community-Based Medicine, Translational Medicine, Cancer and Imaging Sciences, and Clinical and Laboratory Studies (mainly postgraduate and research divisions).
Manchester Metropolitan University
It was established in 1970 as Manchester Polytechnic and gained university status in 1992. It teaches one of the highest number of students in the UK - over 33 thousand. Its outlying facilities are located in Cheshire. The Board of Governors, leading the University, are responsible for the main guidelines concerning its activity. The eight faculties with diverse academic departments include: - Faculty of Humanities, Law and Social Science; - MMU Business School; - Faculty of Art and Design; - Faculty of Science and Engineering; - MMU Cheshire; - Hollings Faculty; - MMU Institute of Education; - Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care. Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care offers different categories of courses, such as Acupuncture, Emergency care, Health & Social Care, Medicine, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Social change, Social work, and Speech & language therapy.
